Why Acreages Are Ideal Solar Properties

Urban solar installations are often constrained by roof size, roof orientation, shading from neighbouring buildings, and HOA restrictions. Acreage owners deal with almost none of these constraints:

• Space for ground-mount systems — ground-mounted solar arrays can be positioned at the optimal angle and orientation regardless of what direction the house faces
• Minimal shading — open rural land with no neighbouring buildings creates ideal conditions for consistent generation throughout the day
• Higher energy loads — shops, barns, outbuildings, water pumps, and heated spaces all add to consumption that solar can offset
• Eligible for agricultural incentives — if any portion of the property qualifies as an agricultural operation, ASIP and other farm-specific incentives may apply

Rooftop vs Ground-Mount for Acreages

Most acreage solar installations have a choice between rooftop and ground-mount systems — and for many acreage owners, ground-mount is the better option.

Ground-mount systems can be positioned and angled independently of the house structure, which typically delivers 5–15% more annual generation than a rooftop system on a house with imperfect orientation. They're also easier to maintain and expand, and they don't require penetrating the roof structure.

The tradeoff is land use — a 20 kW ground-mount array requires roughly 1,500–2,000 square feet of clear, south-facing land. For most acreage properties, this is a non-issue.

Sizing Solar for an Acreage

Acreage energy bills vary enormously depending on what's on the property. A simple house on an acreage might have bills similar to an urban home. An acreage with a heated shop, barn, water system, and outbuildings might have bills 3–5 times higher.
