Your solar panels generate DC electricity. Your home runs on AC. The inverter bridges that gap — converting DC from your panels into the AC your house can use. But inverters do more than convert current: they also manage system performance, communicate with your monitoring app, and in some configurations, handle panel-level optimization. Here's a plain-language breakdown of the three main inverter types and how to choose for an Alberta installation.
A string inverter is a single central unit — typically wall-mounted in your garage or mechanical room — that converts the DC output of all your panels into AC. Panels are wired together in series strings, and all strings feed into this single inverter.
Advantages:
The limitation: String inverters operate at the output level of the lowest-performing panel in the string. If one panel is shaded, dirty, or underperforming, it pulls down the output of every panel connected to it in that string. This is the classic "Christmas tree light" problem — one weak link affects the whole chain.
For Alberta properties with clean, unshaded south-facing roofs, string inverters are typically the right choice. The shading penalty doesn't apply, and the lower cost delivers better overall ROI.
Microinverters install on the back of each individual panel, converting DC to AC at the panel level. Each panel operates independently — one shaded or underperforming panel has no effect on the rest of the array.
Advantages:
The tradeoffs: Microinverters cost significantly more than a string inverter — typically $0.20–0.35 more per watt installed. They're also harder to service because each unit is mounted on the roof under the panel. On an unshaded Alberta roof, you're paying a premium for independence that you don't actually need.
Microinverters make the most sense for roofs with multiple orientations, partial shading from trees or dormer structures, or where future panel additions are likely (each addition is fully independent).
Power optimizers (sold primarily under the SolarEdge brand) sit between string inverters and microinverters. A DC optimizer mounts on the back of each panel, maximizing each panel's output individually before sending the conditioned DC power to a central inverter.
Advantages:
The tradeoff: You still have a central inverter as a single point of failure, and the optimizer components add complexity compared to a simple string inverter. For fully unshaded roofs, the added cost of optimizers may not be justified.
For the majority of Alberta residential installations — a house with a reasonably unshaded south-facing roof — a quality string inverter from an established manufacturer (SMA, Fronius, Growatt) is the right call. Lower cost, proven performance, straightforward maintenance.
If your roof has meaningful shading from trees, neighbouring structures, chimneys, or multiple roof faces at different orientations, microinverters or power optimizers will recover that lost production and pay for the premium.
For farm and commercial ground-mount systems, string inverters with central monitoring are almost always the correct choice — ground-mount arrays are positioned for optimal orientation and have no shading issues.
