Walk into any conversation about solar panels in Alberta and you'll quickly encounter a list of brand names — Jinko, Canadian Solar, REC, SunPower, LG, Risen, Trina, QCells. Every installer has their preferred brand, and every brand has a marketing sheet that makes their panels sound best. Here's what actually matters when evaluating solar panels — and what's largely noise.

Efficiency: Important, But Not the Whole Story

Panel efficiency — the percentage of sunlight converted to electricity — is the most commonly cited spec and the most commonly misunderstood. A 22% efficient panel is better than a 19% efficient panel in a fixed space, but the practical difference is often smaller than it sounds.

For most Alberta installations, roof space is not the limiting factor. If you have enough south-facing roof to fit the panels your system requires, a 19% panel at a lower cost will deliver the same annual kWh production as a 22% panel at a higher cost — you just need slightly more panels. The efficiency gap matters most when roof space is genuinely constrained.

Where efficiency does matter: ground-mount systems where land isn't the constraint but you want to minimize racking costs, or very tight urban rooftops where the entire south-facing section is just large enough for the required capacity.

Temperature Coefficient: The Alberta-Specific Spec

Temperature coefficient describes how much panel output drops as temperature rises above 25°C. Most panels lose 0.3–0.5% of rated output for each degree above 25°C. In Alberta, summer temperatures can push roof surface temperatures to 60–70°C on hot days, meaning panels operating at 35–45°C above the rated test temperature.

A panel with a -0.30%/°C temperature coefficient handles Alberta summers better than one rated at -0.45%/°C. The difference in a hot July week can be 5–8% of output. For Alberta's climate specifically, temperature coefficient is worth paying attention to alongside efficiency.

Degradation Rate: The 25-Year Picture

All solar panels degrade over time — output slowly decreases each year as the semiconductor material ages. Industry standard is approximately 0.5% per year, meaning a panel rated at 400W today would produce about 350W after 25 years. Premium panels often carry warranties guaranteeing no more than 0.4% annual degradation, resulting in meaningfully more power over the system lifetime.

Over a 25-year system life, the difference between a 0.4%/year and 0.6%/year degradation rate compounds to roughly 5% of lifetime production. On a 10 kW system producing 13,000 kWh annually, that's 650 kWh per year by year 25 — real money over time.

Warranty Terms: Reading the Fine Print

Solar panel warranties have two components: the product warranty (covering manufacturing defects) and the performance warranty (guaranteeing a minimum output level over time). These are not the same thing.

Product warranty periods range from 10 to 25 years depending on manufacturer. Performance warranties typically run 25 years with tiered guarantees — for example, 97% of rated output in year 1, declining to 80% by year 25. Read these carefully. A 25-year warranty from a manufacturer with a track record of standing behind it is worth more than a 30-year warranty from a company that may not exist in 15 years.

Tier 1 vs Tier 2: What It Actually Means

You'll often hear installers refer to "Tier 1" panels as a quality indicator. The Tier 1 classification comes from Bloomberg NEF and refers primarily to the manufacturer's bankability and financial stability — it's an assessment of the manufacturer, not the panel itself. A Tier 1 manufacturer is one that has demonstrated sufficient scale and financial strength that lenders will finance projects using their panels.

Tier 1 status is a reasonable baseline signal, but it's not a quality guarantee. There are Tier 1 manufacturers producing budget panels and Tier 2 manufacturers producing excellent ones. Use it as a starting point, not a final filter.
