Solar Panel Maintenance in Alberta: What's Actually Required

One of the genuine advantages of solar energy is that installed systems require very little ongoing maintenance. No moving parts, no fuel, no filters to change. But "very little" isn't the same as "nothing" — here's what Alberta solar owners actually need to do to keep their systems performing well.

Routine Monitoring (Monthly)

The most important maintenance habit for any solar owner is monitoring system output regularly. Modern inverters provide real-time generation data through apps or web portals. Checking monthly — and especially after extended cloudy periods or snowfall — lets you catch any underperformance early before it compounds over time.

What to look for: compare current month output to the same month in previous years. A 10–15% variance is normal due to weather variation. A consistent 20%+ drop from expected output warrants investigation — it may indicate a shading issue, inverter fault, or panel degradation.

Snow Removal (As Needed)

As we've covered in our winter solar article, panels generally clear themselves within 1–3 days of snowfall. However, if significant snow accumulation is reducing generation during a clear cold stretch, manual removal can recover that output.

If you clear snow from panels: use a soft brush or foam squeegee — never a metal scraper. Scratching the panel surface reduces output permanently. Never use hot water on cold panels — thermal shock can crack the glass.

Panel Cleaning (Annual or As Needed)

In most Alberta locations, rainfall provides adequate cleaning for solar panels. Dust, pollen, and bird droppings occasionally accumulate between rain events, but the impact on output is usually minor — 1–3% reduction for light soiling.

An annual rinse with a garden hose during spring is reasonable maintenance for most residential installations. For farm properties where dust from field operations or livestock can cause heavier soiling, more frequent cleaning may improve output noticeably.

Professional Inspection (Every 5 Years)

A professional inspection every 3–5 years is a reasonable maintenance schedule for Alberta solar systems. This covers:

• Electrical connection integrity — connections can loosen over time due to thermal cycling
• Racking and mounting hardware — check for corrosion or loosening, especially in high-wind areas
• Inverter performance — inverters typically last 10–15 years and may need replacement mid-system-life
• Panel output testing — identify any panels that have degraded faster than expected

Inverter Replacement

Solar panels are rated for 25+ years and degrade slowly — typically 0.5% per year under warranty. Inverters have a shorter lifespan, typically 10–15 years for string inverters. Budget for one inverter replacement over the life of a solar system. Microinverters (installed per panel rather than centrally) generally last longer but cost more upfront.

What You Don't Need to Do

No oil changes. No filter replacements. No belt or bearing inspections. No fuel purchases. The low maintenance requirement of solar is a genuine advantage over mechanical energy systems — and it's one reason the 25-year total cost of ownership calculation is so favourable.
