Rocky View County wraps most of the way around Calgary, and it's really two different places. East of the city, past Chestermere and out toward Irricana, Kathyrn and Delacour, it's working farmland — a good portion of it inside the Western Irrigation District. West of the city, around Springbank, Bearspaw and Bragg Creek, it's acreages, horse properties and shops.
Those two halves need different systems, and they need different conversations.
East Rocky View: irrigation and cropping
The WID runs north to Irricana and south to Carseland, covering a large share of the farmland in the eastern county. Irrigated operations here draw hard through the growing season, and that draw lines up well with peak solar production — which is the strongest structural argument for solar on any irrigated operation.
Dryland and mixed farms in the same area run a different shape: harvest peaks, winter shop load, and a quieter middle. Both are workable. They're just not the same system.
West Rocky View: acreages and shops
Out west it's a different question entirely. Heated shops, horse barns with waterers and ventilation, well pumps, and homes on large lots — the load is smaller than a farm but often steadier than people expect, and the properties almost always have room for a ground mount.
The honest answer on acreages is that the numbers vary enormously depending on what's actually in your shop. We'd rather look at your bill than guess.
Why some solar quotes don't hold up
A lot of what gets quoted around Calgary is sized from a roof and a rough consumption estimate. That works badly here, because Rocky View properties are so varied — a 40-acre horse property and a 1,200-acre grain farm are both "Rocky View County," and they have nothing in common electrically.
